Please join the Kingston Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) on Saturday, May 23, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:30  for our regular Branch meeting and presentation.

Founded in 1850 on Kingston’s outskirts, Cataraqui Cemetery has grown into one of Canada’s most significant historic burial grounds and is a designated National Historic Site. Its 91‑acre landscape of ponds, mature trees, and curving pathways reflects the 19th‑century garden‑cemetery movement and the design vision of landscape architect Frederick Cornell. After Kingston banned burials within city limits in 1864, Cataraqui became the region’s principal resting place and today holds more than 46,000 interments.

Among those buried here are individuals who shaped local and national history, including Sir John A. Macdonald, Alexander Campbell, John Counter, and prominent military figures. The cemetery also contains sections dedicated to veterans of both World Wars and generations of community leaders, artists, and academics.

In this talk, Duncan Jamieson, the Assistant Manager of Funeral and Client Services at Cataraqui Cemetery, traces the cemetery’s origins, design, and evolution, highlighting the people and stories that make it a vital repository of Kingston’s cultural memory.

This meeting is a hybrid, in-person and on Zoom and is open to all.  If you are interested in attending remotely, please register by clicking this link.  In person is at the Seniors Centre, 56 Francis St., Kingston.

We hope to see you in-person and on-line on Saturday morning!
