Cataraqui Cemetery Records

In commemoration of our 50th anniversary in 2023, the Kingston Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society undertook several noteworthy projects, including the transcription of the Cataraqui Cemetery burial register.

Cataraqui Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Frontenac County, has a rich and lasting history and is the final resting place for many notable people. With the gracious permission of the cemetery and access to microfilm records available at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library, volunteers from the branch transcribed the burial register pages spanning the years from the cemetery’s founding in 1853 to 1978. These records are now accessible to researchers worldwide on this website.

During the 1980s, our branch published a portion of the burial register, encompassing the years 1853 to 1921, and which included 15,000 entries. This publication provided details such as names, ages, birth and death places, dates of death, officiating ministers, and burial sections. For additional information, readers were referred to the original microfilm registers.

Our 50th-anniversary project augmented this publication by adding 19,301 new entries, thus bringing the total to 34,301, all available on the OGS Kingston website. Users can search the index by surname, given names, year of death (or interment), and section and lot number. Users can then click on a link to view the image of the corresponding page of the burial register, where additional details such as the place and cause of death, grave costs, and additional pertinent information are often found. (The additional data available depends on the information recorded at the time of registration.)

This index is the culmination of countless hours of meticulous work by dedicated volunteers.

Researchers are not charged to use the index, but Kingston Branch and Cataraqui Cemetery would greatly appreciate a charitable donation.
