OGS Kingston members with an interest in the global and local context of slavery in Canada still have a few weeks to check out an exhibition at City Hall. A History Exposed: The Enslavement of Black People in Canada is a travelling exhibition located in the Market Wing Cultural Space until May 22, 2026.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Dr. Afua Cooper and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax. Dr. Cooper is a leading scholar, author and poet as well as founder of Dalhousie University’s Black and African Diaspora Studies Minor. Dr. Cooper’s book, The Hanging of Angelique, was nominated for a Governor General’s award and Marie-Joseph Angelique’s story features prominently in the exhibition.

The exhibition seeks to challenge narratives about the slave trade in Canada as beginning with the underground railroad, and delves deeper into the historic reality of two centuries of enslavement in the territories that would become Canada.
The travelling exhibition is based on a larger exhibition at Pier 21 and is fully booked and travelling across Canada until 2023, so this is your chance to see it in Kingston.
The location in City Hall is fully accessible and opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
