Phase 1 Complete!
We’re pleased to announce that we have completed the initial upgrade of the Kingston Branch OGS Website to the Customizr Pro theme (yes, their marketing folks spelled it that way).
There is much re-organizing of the material still left to do, several pages that still need a lot of work, and we really need more images and graphics. But for now, it should work as well as it did yesterday, and maybe it will be easier on the eye.
Testing Needed
Please snoop around the website and let us know if anything is broken. Could be anything, but in this round, we just need to make sure the site works at least as well as it did before. Candidates for the bug list include
- Links that don’t work (take you to a non-existant page, resulting in a 404 error)
- Graphics that cover text
- Text that covers graphics
- Text that seems to be missing, truncated, or not flowing the way it used to
- Typos and grammar errors
- Factual errors
- Send an email to [email protected] to report any bugs found.
- Please indicate the page title, or URL if you can.
- Describe the bug as much as is necessary.
- If you know the proper solution (e.g. “link doesn’t work but it should be https:\\abcde.feg.ij.com), then please send that along to save me looking it up or guessing. Or if it needs a picture of Daisy Mae and you can send me a copy of the photo used in the past, it will be easier to deal with quickly.
Collecting Notes for the Next Phase of Upgrade
Anything that really belongs on the long-term to-do list (i.e. is not urgent to deal with in the 1.0 release), we will deal with separately.
- Please provide the same level of detail, again with a solution if you have one.
- Note the suggestion as a “nice-to-have-soon” for Phase 2 or 3, not a “gotta-have-now” for phase 1.
- Again, you can help immensely if you are able to provide the solution (like the missing image, the correct wording, the needed paragraphs, the correct link).
Submitting Images and Articles
We would really like to see this website become a dynamic, growing medium for communications, research, sharing of information, and recruiting! You can help out if you are able to contribute material. We are looking for:
- Family history stories
- Research stories
- “How to” tips and instructions
- Research aids
- Book reviews
- Webinar summaries and reviews
- Reviews of tools and sites for making trees, analyzing DNA, collecting stories, etc.
- Intesting links to follow
- Photographs
- Graphics
- Flow Charts
- Trees
- Send an email to [email protected] with your contribution.
Just for context, this is what the home page looked like before.
I think we are better off today, even if some adjustments are needed.

Thanks!
Alan
About the Image
This print was clipped from a calendar or magazine that was framed and hung on a wall at my grandparents’ place for decades. (Yes, that is newsprint that has been faded by the sun.)
My Grandmother was originally from Kingston and my Grandfather from Harrowsmith, but from the end of the first war until 1957 they lived in northern Ontario where Grampa worked as a school principal. They retired to a farm near Perth and sold it in 1982; I collected several treasures when they gave up the farm. But they always spoke of the Kingston and Harrowsmith area as home.
This seemed like such a nice old image of Kingston that Audrey and I felt we had to give it a bit more life beyond the Maintenance page.
The artist, Robert W. Pilot, died in 1967, but his work is still available. Wikipedia knows about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pilot. And check out the current prices for his art online!
