Past Meetings 2014

November 15, 2014 — John Fielding spoke on “A Boy, a Company, A Town,” about Tony Daicar’s immigration to Canada and the development of the Bata Shoe Company and the town of Batawa, Ontario.

October 18, 2014 — Shelley Respondek gave a talk and slide show about the newly-renovated Lennox and Addington County Archives at the Museum and Archives in Napanee.

September 20, 2014 — Christine Woodcock, lecturer, author, blogger and director of Genealogy Tours in Scotland, gave an interesting talk called In Search of Your Scottish Ancestors: Search Your Roots; Discover Your Heritage. Among other topics, she spoke about the website ScotlandsPeople, Scottish clans, cluster genealogy and Scottish naming patterns.

May 17, 2014 — In honour of Mother’s Day, several members gave brief, interesting and informative talks about their research on female ancestors.

April 12, 2014 — Guest speaker Lesley Anderson presented an all-day workshop on how to search Ancestry.ca and its affiliated databases.

March 15, 2014 — As St. Patrick’s Day approached, Ron Mann presented an interesting case study and talk on the subject of “How to Smash Down those Brick Walls: Even in Ireland!”

February 15, 2014 — Nancy Cutway gave a presentation on using the Queen’s University Libraries for genealogical research. She gave many useful tips about how to find resources–from maps to microfilm, newspapers, archival material and more. She also shared comprehensive resource lists, including her Index to Newspaper Holdings at Queen’s University, which can be found in the Members Only section of the website.

January 18, 2014 — “Inheritance in Ontario: Estate Files and Beyond” – Jane MacNamara spoke about estate files, wills court registers, minute books, and other documents that track the progress of a person’s estate through the Ontario courts. She showed how these records can add valuable family history clues and help tell the whole story. She showed how to find an estate file and how it could lead to other sources both inside and outside the court system.
